Change… for the better

Yesterday, President Obama reversed a regulation issued shortly before the end of the George W. Bush administration that allowed federal agencies to skip consultations with government scientists when starting projects that could impact endangered wildlife.

President Obama issued a memorandum that suspends the regulation, and a review of the Bush administration’s regulation has been ordered to see whether it promotes the purposes of the Endangered Species Act.

Actions during the Bush administration resulted, for example, in the reduction in the habitat for the endangered northern spotted owl in several western states, including California, by 23% (1.6 million acres), an area LARGER than the ENTIRE Sequoia National Forest.

Numerous environment groups were quick to praise President Obama’s action.
