What are they thinking?
Somewhere along the line, people have got to learn to distinguish between political arguments and objective biological reality. There is a reality that exists outside of personal opinions, and that reality can be measured. I start to question the sanity of folks who cannot see the interconnectedness of life on this planet, and then I remember that, “…we’re all mad here….”
In a move that surely will affect California and other states, the Bush administration today cleared the way for federal agencies to skip consultations with government scientists when starting projects that may impact endangered wildlife. Sure, the bureaucrats know all about this scientific stuff. 
The move will take effect before Barack Obama takes office and is expected to take months to undo.
Of course, the Bush administration has never been a friend to the environment, slashing spotted owl habitat in California and other western states in August of this year. Even some Republicans in California’s own state government apparently don’t “get it” with regard to habitat distruction.
It seems a little incomprehensible that greed could trump the instinct for self preservation. Such moves are also hard to explain by insufficient intelligence or education.
The Cheshire Cat’s observation concerning insanity, and even Mark Twain’s concurrence, seems to be the most plausible explanation.
