Antiaircraft worm

Prepare to launch “the worm!” :-)

(Seriously, there was so much tech news of importance tonight that I had to pick one that seemed PARTICULARLY important.)

I wrote a couple of times (1, 2) recently about the Conficker (AKA “Downadup”) worm that attacks and is transmitted through UNPATCHED Windows systems (the last time I looked, 9 million of them!). A patch is available from Microsoft. See my earlier entry for a link.

In the last two weeks, some French fighter planes were grounded because the French military had failed to take sufficient action to prevent the spread of the Conficker (Downadup) worm (which, admittedly, is spread very easily), after being warned by Microsoft. A publication, “Intelligence Online” was quoted as saying that the French defence <defense> ministry’s networks have been infected by a computer virus that has brought down certain arms systems, like that of the French Navy’s Rafale fighter aircraft….” Wikipedia has a nice article about the Rafale fighter.

This is another reason that I (just “my humble opinion”) would not want Windows software in any vehicle I drive, athough admittedly, reinstallation of an operating system would be easier on the ground than in the air. :-)
