14 tons; “What do you get?”

…Another day older and deeper in debt.” (YouTube video) sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford, “Sixteen Tons

In one of the largest busts ever accomplished by the U.S. Border Patrol, authorities intercepted a tractor-trailer truck loaded with 14 tons of marijuana bound for Los Angeles, California yesterday. A canine officer detected the load at a checkpoint on State Highway 86 near Salton. The marijuana was hidden inside large wooden crates. The agents found more than 1,100 bundles of marijuana worth more than $22.6 million, and the 35-year-old driver was arrested.

The Drug Enforcement Administration declined to comment on the bust, which was the largest ever in the history of Imperial County!

The bust continues a series of large marijuana seizures that include a 25-ton bust last November by agents in San Diego, and another, of 20 tons, two weeks later. Both of these occurred in warehouses that were linked to Mexico by tunnels. In October of 2010, Mexican authorities seized 134 tons of marijuana in Tijuana, the largest bust in Mexican history! Those drugs were believed to belong to the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico’s most powerful organized crime group, authorities said.

The Sinaloa cartel, is headed by Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, 54, a multi-billionaire fugitive whose wife, Emma Coronel, 22,  a former beauty queen with U.S. citizenship, gave birth to twin girls at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, California, according to birth records and a senior U.S. law enforcement official. The L.A. County birth certificates for the girls have blank spaces for “Name of Father.”
