Tunnel rats and loco weed

And not the BRAVE “tunnel rats” of the Vietnam War, either…!

As some California voters defeated Proposition 19, which would have legalized marijuana for recreational use in the state, other California voters said “Yes!” to pot taxes!

Confused? You bet! :-) Welcome to the strange and wonderful world of California elections!

And in the “business as usual department, a 600-yard tunnel was discovered between a warehouse in Tijuana, Mexico, and the Otay Mesa industrial area of San Diego, along with 30 TONS of marijuana!

Although the 30 tons was one of the biggest pot busts on the California-Mexico border, it PALES IN COMPARISON WITH THE 134-TON bust recently, which was followed by the execution-style killings of 13 people on the Mexican side in a drug rehabilitation center.

This time, the smugglers were caught in the act.

So… with the election result, it looks as though the status quo of big pot busts by U.S. authorities and killings and other violence on the Mexican side, will continue, as usual….

(Note added November 6, 2010: The University of Texas at Brownsville [about half a mile from the U.S.-Mexico border] and Texas Southmost College canceled classes through today because of gunfire taking place across the Rio Grande. Antonio Ezequiel Cardenas Guillen [48,  a top leader of one of Mexico’s major drug-trafficking operations], known as “Tony Tormenta” or “Tony the Storm,” was killed in a shootout Friday in the border city of Matamoros, Mexico. Yes, business as usual in the war on drugs….)

(Note added November 7, 2010: In Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, yesterday, 18 people were killed in separate shootings. Yep, business as usual…. Or MAYBE, it’s over 20 killed in Juarez….)

(Note added November 8, 2010: And the killings just “keep on coming,” as a statement released by the Mexican Navy totals the dead in Matamoros, Mexico gun battles at “at least 55 people, including three marines and a local reporter….” The University of Texas at Brownsville, just across the Rio Grande, went back to school today.)

(Note added November 14, 2010: More than 3 TONS of marijuana were seized in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, near Falfurrias, TX. The value of the 6,700 pounds of marijuana was estimated to be approximately $5.3 million. And so the cycle continues….)

(Note added November 27, 2010: If you like to watch history repeat itself, here you go! In the “War on Drugs,” history seems to repeat itself at short, regular intervals.)
