Apple reports new record sales: $20 billion

Apple reported a new record for sales in its fourth quarter today: $20 billion! The 14.1 million iPhones sold during the quarter was a 91% increase from last year’s quarter and beat even the most positive estimates from Wall Street! COO Tim Cook told analysts that Apple would have sold even more had they been able to keep up with demand. Apple sold 3.9 million Macintoshes, up 27% versus the previous quarter, and it sold  250,000 Apple TV devices. Apple “beat the Street” and showed a profit of $4.3 billion, or $4.64 per share, which is up 70% from a year ago.

The brand-new iPad revenue stream, which did not exist six months ago, was LESS than expected: 4.2 million iPads, as compared with the predictions :-) of analysts of 5 million iPads. However, the iPad sales were UP from 3.3 million iPads sold in the previous quarter. More than $2.7 billion (13% of quarterly revenues) came from iPad sales. I think that most “competitors” would LOVE to have such “problems” with tablet sales! 😉

I understand. The main two factors keeping me from purchasing an iPad, which I view as a revolutionary device, are: 1) cost and 2) lack of a camera for videoconferencing. The cost factor may be aided by competition among various vendors, starting October 28, (OR NOT)! :-) The camera requires a design and manufacturing change.

Steve Jobs joined the conference call and announced that he was “blown away” by the quarter’s results and promised, “We still have a few surprises left for the remainder of this calendar year.” Jobs took the opportunity to bash competitors (always entertaining, especially “in person”), whom he said were more like “qualified entrants,” and whom I would call “wannabes.”

You can read about the competitor bashing and see the bar graphs in the CNN article!
