“All of us wants to know…

… just as much as I wants to know….” –FireSign Theater (1, 2), “Don’t Crush that Dwarf; Hand Me the Pliers.

According to a Wall Street Journal report today, Apple plans to release a new iPhone that could run on Verizon, Sprint, and some smaller carriers.

The Wall Street Journal report caused Apple stock, which closed at a record $232.39, to jump 6.41 points in after hours trading. (The more cynical of us Silicon Valley refugees always think of press statements in terms of stock prices, for the large stock holdings of Silicon Valley executives and others. :-) )

According to comScore Inc., Verizon has 23% of the U.S. smart-phone market, compared to AT&T’s 43%. AT&T’s growth for several quarters has come almost exclusively from the iPhone, even though such bandwidth-hungry customers have engendered a love-hate relationship with AT&T’s executive management.

Analysts don’t expect a Verizon iPhone until 2011! :-)

(Note added April 1, 2010: So, obviously, SOMEONE is wrong!)

Read the Wall Street Journal article for more details about the manufacture of next-generation iPhones.

And then offer advice to guys like me whose high-$$$ contract with AT&T has just expired and who love iPhones, but can do without AT&T, having seen them “up close and personal….” :-)
