“…where the rain gets in…

… and stops my mind from wandering….” – Paul McCartney (Lennon/McCartney) “Fixing a Hole

Tomorrow, (Tuesday) Microsoft will provide an emergency update for Internet Explorer (IE) that fixes nine vulnerabilites, including one that has been used in attacks on IE6 and IE7. Three weeks ago, Microsoft issued Security Advisory 981374 and warned of the attacks.

The zero-day hole in IE ( IE8 and Windows 7 users are not vulnerable, according to a Microsoft bulletin notification) could allow an attacker to take over the machine of a user who visits a malicious web site.

Since the cumulative patch tomorrow will address NINE vulnerabilities, ALL current versions of Windows are affected by the patch.

See the CNET article, which quotes the chief technology officer of Qualys as recommending that users of IE6 and IE7 patch immediately and that users of IE8 patch as quickly as possible, anticipating the reverse engineering of flaws addressed and corresponding exploits within the week.
