Two if by sea

I’ve written before about marijuana farms deep within the Sequoia National Forest and not-so-deep within Sequoia National Park and elsewhere, established by Mexican drug cartels as an alternative to smuggling pot across the border.

Within the last year, Mexican smugglers have turned increasingly to another route for smuggling TWO major “commodities,” marijuana and PEOPLE… the SEA!

Laren Mack, a spokesperson for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in San Diego, California noted “a huge spike in smuggling by water” and cited the difficulty and risk in smuggling overland. U.S. Coast Guard Captain, Thomas Farris, the top-ranking Coast Guard official at the Port of San Diego said that interdictions of human cargo have doubled since last year and interdictions of drugs are SIX times last year’s figures. So far, that comes to 60,000 pounds (27, 216 kg) of marijuana and 400 people!

Smugglers often use small fishing boats of 19-28 feet (5.8-8.5 m), known as pangas, to smuggle human and marijuana cargo. The tactics of smugglers, both on land and by sea, have become increasingly violent. The CNN article details an incident on Tuesday involving three vans filled with illegal immigrants, in which one Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official and two Customs and Border Protection agents opened fire at the San Ysidro border crossing between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California, the busiest land border crossing in the world, with 45,000 vehicles and 95,000 people crossing each day.
