The shape of things to come?
I know that the prices of gasoline and other fuels in many other countries are much higher than in the U.S.
That said, the prices of gasoline in California USED to be much higher than in other parts of the United States. No longer…but ours inch up higher and lead the prices found in the other states. Now (and probably THEN) California seems/seemed to be more of a “test market” for how high the petroleum industry can/could raise prices in the U.S.
So…I read a CNN article today about angry protests concerning fuel prices in the United Kingdom with much interest! Although the protests are not the “food riots” of the films “Soylent Green” and “The Running Man” (the latter with Arnold Schwarzenegger [now California governor] smeared as “The Butcher of Bakersfield”), fuel prices in the UK will almost certainly increase the prices of food, as they have in the U.S.
According to the article, the price of diesel fuel in the UK is now the equivalent of almost $11.50/U.S. gallon, and folks in the UK are requesting relief from fuel taxes, which make up 63% of the cost of fuel in the UK.
Folks in the UK know that even GOVERNMENTS are more responsive than most corporations.
Hundreds (the article estimates 1600 total) of truck drivers in cities across Britain parked their rigs to protest a greater than 30% increase in diesel fuel prices in the last year.
I, for one, am watching the outcome.
