The Waldo Tunnel

Waldo Tunnel

The Waldo Tunnel is an unofficial name given to a dual-bore tunnel on highway 101 between the Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito. The tunnel is named after Waldo Point along Richardson Bay between Sausalito and Mill Valley, and the Point is in turn named after William Waldo, an unsuccessful Whig candidate for California governor in 1853.

One bore of the Waldo Tunnel was completed in 1937 and the second in 1954. The tunnel is featured in the Clint Eastwood film “Dirty Harry” and in the Humphrey Bogart film “Dark Passage.”

The arches at the ends of the tunnel bores were painted in rainbows by the Caltrans employee, Robert Halligan, so the tunnel is sometimes called the “Rainbow Tunnel.”
