California’s unsung beach towns to visit NOW: 15 of them!
The SFGate.com article (and slideshow!) starts out:
We’re coming up on California’s real summer, so what better time to explore some uncharted coastal territory?
SFGate is totally right! (Like, TOTALLY, dude! 😉 ) Autumn is a great time to visit California’s coast. I tell people that October is usually a GREAT “beach month,” but August and September are no slouches, either!
SFGate has some favorites that most of the world has not discovered, like Elk, Gualala, Cambria, and Morro Bay, but starts out the list of 15 with the northernmost coastal town in California (and one that we visited for the first time this summer): Crescent City. SFGate.com romantically describes Crescent City in this way:
The spectacularly lonely, untamed landscape of cliffs lashed by angry waves is perfect for soulful walks on empty beaches, walking through tide pools to reach the old Battery Point Lighthouse, and wandering through giant Coast Redwood forests, legendary host to Ewoks (“Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”) and the occasional Bigfoot.
We have not explored ALL of the places on the list (so we have some fun ahead of us), but I agree with the choices of places that we’ve visited! Without further ado, here is the list (and some links):
- Crescent City
- Shelter Cove, the only civilization in the Lost Coast Wilderness
- Point Arena
- Marshall
- Point Reyes Station
- Bolinas (xenophobic; locals take down the road signs)
- Pescadero (We like it!)
- Cayucos (We like it, too!)
- Avila Beach (We like it!)
- Playa del Rey
- San Pedro
- Dana Point
- San Clemente
- Encinitas
- Del Mar
Happy Trails!
