Magnitude 6.0 earthquake hits California; dozens are injured, 3 critically.
The strongest earthquake to hit the San Francisco Bay Area in 25 years hit at 3:20 AM today with an epicenter 4 miles northwest of American Canyon (GoogleMap), 6 miles southwest of Napa, and 9 miles southeast of Sonoma. At least 90 people were injured in Napa alone, 3 of them critically. One of those critically injured was a child who was hurt when a fireplace collapsed and who was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center. The majority of the injuries were from falling debris.
There were at least 30 water main breaks and leaks that have been reported. Six major fires broke out and several mobile homes were completely destroyed by fire. The City of Napa has turned Napa High School into a shelter for those who lost their homes. There were over 100 reports of gas leaks and downed power lines, and 15,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Company customers have lost their services.
Some historic buildings in downtown Napa were damaged.
The USGS estimated, based on their locations, that 15,000 people experienced severe shaking, 106,000 people felt very strong shaking, 176,000 felt strong shaking, and 738,000 felt moderate shaking.
People in Napa reported the quake as a violent jolt. People who felt it in Livermore (58 miles to the southeast) describe it as strong rolling.
