Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers get stolen guitars BACK!

On April 14th, I wrote about the theft of FIVE guitars from a Culver City, Calfornia soundstage where Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had rehearsed for an important international tour that will start TOMORROW in Broomfield, Colorado! The good news? The band got its guitars, all FIVE, back on this, the eve of the tour! A $7,500 reward had been offered for information leading to their return. The guitars included a vintage 1967 Rickenbacker 12-string, a 1967 Epiphone, and a 1965 Gibson.

I am extremely grateful to the Culver City Police Department for a job well done and touched by the outpouring of good wishes and concern from our fans and friends,” Petty said Tuesday on the band’s Facebook page.

According to police, one of the guitars was SOLD at a Hollywood pawn shop. Officers identified the person who pawned the guitar and took Daryl Washington, a resident of L.A., into custody. Then, the other four guitars were recovered! Last night, a 51-year old private security guard was arrested in Los Angeles and booked for grand theft, according to Culver City Police Lieutenant, Ron Lizuka.

Tom Petty, with such hits as “Refugee,” “The Waiting,” “American Girl,” and “Free Fallin’” has sold more than 57 million albums, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (located on the shore of Lake Erie in beautiful downtown Cleveland, Ohio – just GO there! It’s WORTH it. Put it on your bucket list!) inducted Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 2002.
