Record 3 million new iPads sold in 4 days by Apple

On a conference call this morning with analysts, Apple CEO Tim Cook talked about the “record” weekend of the latest iPad, since its release on March 16, without offering specifics. Late today, Apple announced that it had sold more than 3 million new iPads in four days, which makes this the most successful launch of Apple’s tablet to date!

Even those of you with “short memories” may remember the confusion and quandary of “industry experts” and “pundits” when the FIRST iPad was discussed in January of 2010. (Pssssssst! This is one of the “earmarks” of revolutionary technology! :-) Another “telling” absence was the FAILURE to note the subtle reference to Arthur C. Clarke’s “Third Law.” Don’t these folks READ? :-) At that time, the only hardware limitation was the absence of a camera for videoconferencing, an omission that I believe was intentional, to prevent the further “crushing” of AT&T’s network. [AT&T was the sole carrier for the device at that time.]) NOTE: some analysts apparently STILL don’t “get it” when they observe that “There are few significant differences between the new iPad and the second-generation iPad 2, but that didn’t stop thousands of Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) fans from waiting hours in line to be among the first to get it Friday morning.

And:

The new iPad’s flashiest feature is a high-pixel-count “retina display,” previously available only on the iPhone. The new iPad’s screen has 3.1 million pixels, one million more than a 1080p high-definition screen of that size would. It also features a faster processor and a 4G radio.

Industry experts and pundits, please take note – a “retina display” and Verizon LTE capability are two of the three requirements that I have for such a communications device. The third requirement is affordability, not yet achieved for me, but obviously achieved for a “whole lotta” other folks! :-)

So… throw away all of your misconceptions about corporations DRIVING this business! Group-thinking corporations are FOLLOWING the lead of individual customers (so-called “consumers”), who often possess greater insight into the value of revolutionary inventions like iPad, than do the linear thinkers of corporations, who must build a step-by-step pathway in their understanding to such developments. “Consumers” are the drivers, to the tune of 3 million new iPads in 4 days, even at a “steep” price point! There is real VALUE for the money spent!

AT&T said it set a single-day iPad sales record on Friday. The new iPad will be available in 24 more countries this Friday.

See? Even comparatively stodgy companies like AT&T can benefit greatly from the innovation of a company like Apple! 😉 The iPad has nearly 60% of the tablet market, according to the the NPD Group. Gartner forecasts that there will be over 100 million total tablets sold this year!

Innovation has its rewards. Stodginess leads to a slow death of corporations that may take years to realize.
