Rednecks of San Francisco!

Red-necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus), that is! :-)

The newest red-necked wallaby of the San Francisco zoo was born last September, but the reclusive young joey peeked its head out of the pouch only a few weeks ago, according to zoo officials. Visitors can see the joey a the Australian Walkabout exhibit. Jim Nappi, the curator of hoofstock and marsupials for the zoo, said that the joey crawled into the pouch of its mother, Sydney, right after birth, but, because the joey has not left the pouch completely, its sex is not yet known.

The joey joins its red-necked breathren to become the THIRD red-necked wallaby in the zoo. The marsupials can grow to three feet tall and can weigh up to 60 pounds!

This might be a good opportunity to see the joey. Wallabies climb into the pouch of their mother shortly after birth. There, they nurse for around 40 – 43 weeks before leaving the pouch. AFTER they leave the pouch, the mothers “park” their babies in a hidden location and continue to nurse them for another NINE MONTHS, according to Nappi.
