Geezer’d again?

The FBI has not determined whether a robbery at a Wells Fargo bank branch inside a Vons supermarket at 7544 Girard Avenue in La Jolla is the work of the notorious “Geezer Bandit.” The bank robbery (the linked Web page contains a video) would be the 15th for the Geezer Bandit, whose 14th bank robbery was in Morro Bay on May 27, 2011. The September 30 robbery is four months after the robbery in Morrow Bay. The Geezer Bandit’s only other bank robbery in 2011 was on January 28 (exactly four months prior to the robbery in Morrow Bay), in Goleta, the home of the University of California, Santa Barbara (1). The suspect was described as a elderly man about 70 years old, balding with white hair on the side, and carrying a revolver. The suspect did NOT wear a characteristic baseball cap, but was described as “well-dressed” and wearing a light gray suit. Although the man appeared to be elderly, he did not move like a person who is 70 years old. Authorities said that, after the robbery, the suspect walked out of the store and down the sidewalk toward Fay Avenue.

Former San Diego police detective, Rick Calson, in comparing the La Jolla and Morrow Bay robbery videos said:

“I’d say looking at the two pictures there are major similarities in the two suspects.”

FBI Special Agent Darryl Foxworth told 10News, back on October 5:

“There’s not enough information from Friday to make that call. It’s too early. We’re conducting other interviews and looking at surveillance video to get a better picture.”

The Geezer Bandit MAY be a younger person in a “special-effects” theatrical mask. The last time that the Geezer Bandid robbed a bank in San Diego County was on June 7, 2010, at a U.S. Bank in Poway.

A $20,000 reward is currently offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the Geezer Bandit.
