CA November 2010 unemployment rate: still 12.4%
A report released yesterday by the California Employment Development Department (EDD), which was based on data from two separate surveys, showed California’s unemployment rate unchanged at 12.4% in November 2010, and nonfarm payroll jobs increased by only 1,600 during the month. For the U.S. as a whole, the unemployment rate INCREASED in November, to 9.8%.
In November of 2009, the unemployment rate in Calfornia was 12.3%, DOWN from 12.5% in October 2009. Nonfarm payroll jobs in California totaled 13,863,300, an increase of 12,400 jobs (up 0.1%) from November of 2009. The number of people unemployed in California was 2,267,000, which was up by 11,000 over the month and up by 40,000 when compared with November 2009.
The EDD report had the following to say about job categories:
“Six categories (construction; information; professional and business services; educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; and government) added jobs over the month, gaining 22,400 jobs. Construction posted the largest increase over the month, adding 7,800 jobs. Five categories (mining and logging; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; and other services) reported job declines this month, down 20,800 jobs. Trade, transportation and utilities posted the largest decline over the month, down by 12,400 jobs.”
“Four industry divisions (mining and logging; professional and business services; educational and health services; and leisure and hospitality) posted job gains over the year, adding 93,000 jobs. Professional and business services recorded the largest increase over the year on a numerical basis, up 52,400 jobs (a 2.6 percent increase). Mining and logging recorded the largest increase over the year on a percentage basis, up 3.7 percent (an increase of 900 jobs).”
“Seven categories (construction; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; information; financial activities; other services; and government) posted job declines over the year, down 80,600 jobs. Construction employment showed the largest decline over the year on both a numerical and percentage basis, down by 37,100 jobs (a 6.4 percent decline).”
By county, 23 California counties had unemployment rates greater than or equal to 15.0%, with Imperial County still number 1 at 29.1% unemployment.
Also on Friday, President Obama signed the tax cut deal into law. Although the legislation provides for 13 more months to apply for extended jobless benefits. Extended benfits are tied to state unemployment rates, however. It looks like stagnant unemployment in California will aid the unemployed here in getting the extended benefits, as compared with states in which the employment situation is improving.
