271 unknown Picassos found in France

Some 271 previously unknown works by Pablo Picasso, spanning the years 1900 to 1932, were brought to the late artist’s estate for authentication by Pierre Le Guennec, a retired electrician who worked for Picasso during the last three years of the artist’s life. Pablo Picasso died in 1973.

Unlike a recent case involving photographic plates claimed to be lost plates of Ansel Adams, the authenticity of which has been contested by heirs, in THIS case, ALL of the artwork was reviewed by the Picasso Administration and members of the Picasso family and FOUND TO BE AUTHENTIC!

However, the 71-year-old Le Guennec was SUED, on September 23, by Pablo Picasso’s son, Claude Picasso, and five other heirs who say that the artworks are STOLEN! The lawsuit was first reported today by the French newspaper Liberation.

The works include drawings, lithographs, a collection of cubist collages, a watercolor, and notebooks.

The Central Office for the Fight Against Traffic in Cultural Goods seized the artworks from Le Guennec’s home on the French Riviera on October 5 and has placed them in a vault northwest of Paris, at its Nanterre office.

The Picasso family is suing Le Guennec because the electrician has not explained how he acquired such a large number of Picasso’s works, and Le Guennec has not provided any explanation.
