CA unemployment September 2010: same at 12.4%

The report released by the Employment Development Department of the State of California released yesterday shows that unemployment in September 2010 remained the same as in August, at 12.4%. Nonfarm payroll jobs DECLINED by 63,600 during the month. In September of 2009, the unemployment rate was 12.1%.

The U.S. unemployment rate was also unchanged in September, at 9.6%.

Why not?

“American” companies are sitting on piles of cash or spending it overseas instead of hiring back workers. And, there is an election coming up that businesspeople may be :-) trying to influence, by blaming unemployment on Democratic incumbents. Still, politicians don’t HIRE many people, and in fact, GOVERNMENT jobs posted the largest DECLINE in September (see below). The unemployment problem was created by, and is being maintained by, large corporations (small businesses, on the other hand, are being left to die). A lot of the jobs will never come back – they have likely been eliminated or off-shored permanently. Large corporations would like you to forget these facts, and to vote for candidates who would throw more money at them – money that they would likely spend overseas (or SIT on! :-) ) without creating more jobs in the United States. Meanwhile, the candidates that they support, if elected, would need to find money somewhere else – guess WHERE! :-) (Never let your ideologies empty your own pocketbook….)

Nonfarm jobs in California totaled 13,808,500 in September, a decrease of 63,600. This decrease followed a GAIN (as revised) of 10,700 jobs in August. The year-over-year changed from September 2009 was a LOSS of 43,700 jobs, down 0.3%. The number of unemployed people in California in September 2010 was 2,270,000, up by 10,000 over the month and up by 69,000 versus September of 2009.

The report had the following things to say about job categories and industry divisions:

“Four categories (trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; professional and business services; and leisure and hospitality) added jobs over the month, gaining 20,700 jobs. Leisure and hospitality posted the largest increase over the month, adding 7,400 jobs. Seven categories (mining and logging; construction; manufacturing; information; educational and health services; other services; and government) reported job declines this month, down 84,300 jobs. Government posted the largest decline over the month, down by 37,300 jobs.”

“Four industry divisions (mining and logging; professional and business services; educational and health services; and leisure and hospitality) posted job gains over the year, adding 82,800 jobs. Professional and business services recorded the largest increase over the year on both a numerical and percentage basis, up 58,500 jobs (a 2.9 percent increase).”

“Seven categories (construction; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; other services; and government) posted job declines over the year, down 126,500 jobs. Construction employment showed the largest decline over the year on both a numerical and percentage basis, down by 50,700 jobs (a decline of 8.8 percent).”

As always, detailed tables accompany the report. The charts show the 19 California counties with unemployment of 15% or greater, topped by Imperial County with 30.4% unemployment.
