CA unemployment in August 2010: UP to 12.4%
Just as the U.S. unemployment rate increased to 9.6% in August 2010, the California unemployment rate increased from 12.3% in July to 12.4% in August, according to the Employment Development Department (EDD) report released on September 17. “American” businesses are largely to blame. Only 9% of the jobs lost in the Great Recession (now declared “over” as of June of 2009!) have come back, because business has chosen to spend its glut of profits OVERSEAS in ways that actually hurt domestic production in the U.S. Consumer spending accounts for 70% of economic activity in the American economy. The innovation by Americans has been implemented overseas as well, contributing to economic growth abroad at the expense of Americans in the U.S.
As much fun as politicians are to watch on TV, THEY DON’T HIRE MANY PEOPLE, so it’s time for “American” companies to stop “finger-pointing” at politicians, stop prolonging the recession for small businesses and individuals, “put their money where their mouth is,” and HIRE people in the U.S. Meanwhile, you corporations should not expect American voters to vote for tax cuts for you (which you would likely spend overseas, anyway), and don’t expect American voters to want “government to run like a business.” (Myopically and incompetently…?
)
So… how has unemployment gotten worse in August in California?
Nonfarm payroll jobs in California in August totaled 13,827,900, a DECREASE of 33,500 jobs during the month. The year-over-year change from August 2009 to August 2010 shows a decrease of 113,100 jobs (down 0.8 percent). “The number of people unemployed in California was 2,261,000 – up by 11,000 over the month, and up by 81,000 compared with August of last year.” The net loss of 33,500 jobs since the July survey followed a loss of 22,900 jobs (as revised) in July.
The EDD report says this about various categories of jobs:
“Two categories (mining and logging; and professional and business services) added jobs over the month, gaining 500 jobs. Professional and business services posted the largest increase over the month, adding 300 jobs. Nine categories (construction; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; information; financial activities; educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; other services; and government) reported job declines this month, down 34,000 jobs. Government posted the largest decline over the month, down by 9,200 jobs, which includes the loss of 7,700 temporary federal Census jobs.”
“Three industry divisions (mining and logging; professional and business services; and educational and health services) posted job gains over the year, adding 61,500 jobs. Professional and business services recorded the largest increase over the year on a numerical basis, up 38,700 jobs (a 1.9 percent increase). Mining and logging recorded the largest increase over the year on a percentage basis, up 2.4 percent (up 600 jobs).”
“Six categories (construction; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; leisure and hospitality; other services; and government) posted job declines over the year, down 174,600 jobs. Government employment showed the largest decline over the year on a numerical basis, down by 47,700 jobs (a decline of 1.9 percent). Construction showed the largest decline over the year on a percentage basis, down by 7.6 percent (down 44,700 jobs). One sector, information, reported no change over the month.”
Of California counties, 20 reported unemployment rates greater than or equal to 15.0%, with Imperial County the clear “winner” at 30.4% unemployment.
