Verizon 4G Internet to 38 cities

Verizon Wireless announced plans to deliver 4G (4th Generation) Internet to 38 cities, including two, New York and San Francisco, that have been “reported” to have problems with AT&T’s 3G Internet service. Major cities will include New York; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; San Francisco, California; and Atlanta, Georgia. A complete list is in the Information Week article. Verizon will also equip 62 airports with 4G coverage, even in cities that are not part of the initial rollout!

(Note added October 10, 2010: See this “Ask Maggie” column for a detailed explanation of what 4G is, and isn’t, and MORE!)

The 4G wireless network can transmit data 10 times faster, and with only half of the delay, of 3G services. Verizon’s service is called “LTE” (Long Term Evoution) and can reach faster speeds than Sprint’s 4G and T-Mobile’s HSPA+ networks. AT&T says that it will launch its 4G service next year.

The new Verizon CEO, Lowell McAdam, made the announcement today at the CTIA mobile event in San Francisco. Once the network is built, manufacturers will need to include a 4G chip that will be able to take advantage of the 4G network. Such devices are expected within the first half of 2011. The first group of such devices are expected to include both 3G and 4G chips, enabling faster data communication over the 4G network while making calls over 3G network. Verizon has been criticized for its current lack of simultaneous voice and data transmission over 3G.

The areas in the 4G launch will cover about 110 million Americans and is expected to be similar in size to its 3G network by 2013.

Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, will make an announcement with Verizon at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2011.
