Android gaining, iOS declining in mobile Web usage share

CNET has spotlighted a Quantcast report that shows Apple’s iOS lead in mobile Web use is declining. Quantcast said that, in August, Android took usage share from every corner of the market, its best gain in monthly share since November 2009!

Devices that run iOS declined from 70% of mobile Web usage a year ago to 56% of mobile Web usage at the end of August 2010. Android, on the other hand, has gained from a 10% usage share last year to 25% at the end of August. Research in Motion (RIM; think “Blackberry”) is steady at 9%, and “other” is at 10%.

CNET points out that iOS devices (number 1 in Web usage) will likely continue to lose share of mobile Web usage as competitors crank out more Android devices.

It would be VERY interesting to see what iOS devices on Verizon would do to the numbers, a move that could occur in January as suggested by a reported CDMA chipset order by Apple from Qualcomm.

We shall see.
