A cougar dies in Berkeley

Three Berkeley police officers shot and killed a 100-pound female mountain lion behind a home in the 1600 block of Walnut Street in a residential area of Berkeley today, just blocks from Chez Panisse restaurant, the flagship Peet’s Coffee store, the Cheese Board Collective and other businesses along busy Shattuck Avenue in North Berkeley.

The mountain lion had been running through the heart of Berkeley for about a hour. Police consulted with the Department of Fish and Game, according to TV news. The mountain lion was determined to be a public safety threat.

This was not the first time that mountain lions have been killed in urban areas: in Palo Alto in 2004 and in Pleasanton in 2006.

The SFGate.com article has details of the mountain lion incident today. SFGate.com also has a collection of stories about mountain lions in the Bay Area.
