Police in hot pursuit for Special Olympics
Last night at Ocean Speedway (1) in Watsonville, nine cops from various Santa Cruz County departments raced each other on a dirt track in pre-1990 four-cylinders to raise awareness about, and money for, the Special Olympics.
According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel online:
The drivers raced cars owned by the track or cars that were donated by Ocean Speedway racing regulars. The flying mud and sliding cars added to the excitement!
Although none of the officers had experience driving front-wheel drive cars on a dirt track, none of the cars were further damaged during the race!
Jamie Stamps of State Parks took the checkered flag!
As for me, I have been fortunate enough to have had several professional interactions with a Special Olympics gold medalist and her class, and the experiences have been both rewarding and heartwarming.
