It’s not a dichotomy….

I had to laugh when I saw an article on CNET today entitled, “Demand dichotomy: PCs down, iPad up.”

Of course, I saw it just after I saw an article on CNN entitled, “Why does everyone hate Microsoft?” :-) I’m sure that EACH of us must have SEVERAL reasons, but this question was about investors. :-)

So… the CNET article talks about Wall Street analysts turning “bearish” on PC and chip demands while remaining “bullish” on forecasts for Apple iPad. The article quotes J.P. Morgan’s Christopher Danely as warning investors that PC orders are “falling off a cliff.”

(As those of us on the “Left Coast” have known for a long time, Wall Street analysts don’t know much about technology. It was not until recently that we discovered that they don’t know much about financials, either! :-) )

It’s NOT a dichotomy.

It’s a glimmer of intelligence. :-)

(Note added August 20, 2010: It MIGHT not even be a glimmer of intelligence! As “Dell earnings top estimates,” it might just be a case of Wall Street analysts being WRONG yet again! :-) )

Please recall two of my earlier blog entries: the first one, in January 2010, entitled “iPad and the Third Law,” and a later one, in July, entitled “Apple: highest quarterly revenues EVER!” In the January entry, I said, “The iPad appears very much to me to be evolving into ‘the laptop of the future,’ ideal for those who do not need a physical keyboard all of the time (most of us).” In the July entry, I stated, “Apple sold 3.27 million iPads during their first quarter of sales and 3.47 million Macintoshes, a 33% increase over last year’s quarter.” The Macintosh sales were a RECORD for Apple.

So, it’s not just iPad that is selling well, it’s Macintosh, too! (Not to mention iPhone sales at all….) Maybe the slumping PC sales discussed above are Windows PCs.

So, it’s NOT a dichotomy, but a glimmer of intelligence.

The CNN article notes that:

“The biggest thing Microsoft has going for it right now is a looming corporate refresh of PCs, and by all accounts, it’s going to be enormous. A combination of the reviled Windows Vista and the economic recession led many corporate IT departments to max out the life span of their computers.”

(While simultaneously increasing the risk of virus and Trojan infections of their networks…. :-) )

So enjoy the glimmer of intelligence while it lasts, right up until the “corporate refresh.” :-)

Arthur C. Clarke, whose “Third Law” I referenced above, ALSO said:

“It has yet to be proven that intelligence has any survival value.”

Especially in corporations…. :-)

Another quote by Clarke:

“I’m sure the universe is full of intelligent life. It’s just been too intelligent to come here.”
