The “Crown” wildfire grows to 8,000 acres

Today, firefighters launched an aerial assault on the 8,000-acre Crown wildfire in northern Los Angeles County‘s high desert. The fire has destroyed several structures and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes. The wildfire is 5% contained as the result of efforts by 750 firefighters, who are working the eastern and western perimeters to keep the fire out of Palmdale and out of northeast Leona Valley. Firefighters are employing a DC-10 jet, four air tankers, and six helicopters! The priority is to protect critical infrastructure, such as the high-power lines that bring electricity to much of Southern California. A Wikipedia article on 2010 California wildfires is here!

Investigations of the origin of the fire have focused on a vacatnt lot where workers were extracting bolts from tire rims, using a hammer. There appeared to be no illegal activity.

Three trailers and a single-family home were destroyed int he Lazy T Ranch of Leona Valley. Near South Lake Elizabeth Road, one home had roof damage, and three out-buildings and a hay barn were destroyed.

Sheriff’s deputies called for the evacuation of about 2,000 households and 500-750 people left the area, although most were back early today. A second fire, the Briggs fire, was under control by late Thursday after burning more than 350 acres.

The LATimes online has numerous links and photos of the Crown fire.
