Sierra Club LeConte Memorial Lodge

The LeConte Memorial Lodge is a structure in Yosemite Valley at coordinates 37° 44′ 24.39″ N, 119° 34′ 42.32″ W. The Memorial was built by the Sierra Club in 1903 to honor Joseph LeConte, one of the founding members of the club. The Lodge was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

The Lodge was architected by John White and the design was strongly influenced by his brother-in-law, Bernard Maybeck. The vertical nature and texture of Yosemite Valley is reflected in its steeply pitched roof, rough-hewn granite, and exposed beams. The lodge was constructed for $4500 that was contributed by students, alumni and faculty from the University of California and Stanford University, San Francisco businesses, and friends and relatives of LeConte. In addition, the Sierra Club assessed each of its members $1 to help with the cost.

Originally, the Lodge was constructed at the base of Glacier Point, in Curry Village and was dedicated on July 3, 1904. The Lodge was moved in 1919 to its current location across the Merced River from Housekeeping Camp.

Today, the Lodge is owned by the National Park Service and operated by the Sierra Club as a library for conservation and natural history, a museum for the life of Joseph LeConte and the history of the Sierra Club, and a lecture hall.
