The Cheshire Cat: Tim Burton’s love-hate relationship :-)

“The Cheshire Cat was a character I had a very specific image of and it’s because I just have this thing about cats,” Tim Burton said. “The Cheshire Cat taps into what you might call my hatred of cats.”

“Stephen Fry did a great job of getting that creepy quality. You know, this weird kind of floaty, too-focused, creepy — he did it great. He has this thing of getting up close and just sitting there and staring at you, you know, like a cat. It just kind of sits there.”

“I have this thing with cats. And with Cheshire Cat it’s a love-hate relationship. You can, uh, hear it in my voice can’t you?”

(From the Hero Complex blog on the LA Times site)

The Cheshire Cat is a bit of an enigma, which is why it is so endearing to so many. Even the 1951 Disney cartoon character captured the benevolent/malevolent duality of the Cat.

So did Lewis Carroll:

“The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good-natured, she thought: still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt that it ought to be treated with respect.”

and

“The Cat’s head began fading away the moment he was gone, and, by the time he had come back with the Dutchess, it had entirely disappeared; so the King and the executioner ran wildly up and down looking for it, while the rest of the party went back to the game.”

Those of us who have played American McGee’s Alice to the end may understand.

The Hero Complex also covered Alice’s Hollywood tea party today! (We are talking the REAL nonsense “tea party” here, none of that silly political nonsense. :-) (And why would a bunch of conservatives use a name so close to that of a Libertarian group, anyway? Lack of research? :-) ) In fact, the blog is covering aspects of the “Alice in Wonderland” film (directed by Tim Burton) DAILY until the film’s release on March 5.

“Curiouser and curiouser….”

I cannot wait to see how Stephen Fry‘s portrayal of the Cat and Tim Burton’s direction of the Cat play out in this latest telling of the tale.
