A bit of good news

Back on Christmas Day, 2009, I wrote about the group, Repair California, which is seeking to reform partisan politics in Sacramento by calling a constitutional convention.

Right thing…. Wrong way…. (IMHO [“In My Humble Opinion”])

The “good news…?” (Once again, IMHO….)

Repair California needs 1.8 million signatures on a petition by April 15, 2010. So far, they have gathered about 100,000 signatures, and today, they announced that they have run out of money to continue their campaign. The effort so far has cost about $1 million.

Founder Jim Wunderman, who is also president and CEO of the Bay Area Council, said that, barring an influx of $3 million before March 1, he will pull the plug on the initiative on March 1.

Repair California was trying to qualify two ballot measures:

“The first would allow citizens to call for a constitutional convention. The legislature currently holds that authority. The other sought to stage a convention on budget reform and other matters such as the balance of power between state and local governments.”

Repair California said that state goverment has become dysfunctional (they won’t get much disagreement about THAT!) and that a convention is needed to reduce the influence of special interests and to end “gridlock” in Sacramento.

No, I do not profess to have a solution for California’s dysfunctional legislature, although I have suggested locking them up and making them watch Sesame Street lessons on C-O-O-P-E-R-A-T-I-O-N. However, I do not trust the people of the state of California to have the wisdom to “tinker” with the state constitution. I say that because I have seen local and state legislation introduced that shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the liberties upon which our nation was founded.

According to the news article cited above, the California Assembly could not even pull its act together to confirm the governor’s appointment for Lieutenant Governor, Abel Maldonado, a moderate Republican who appears to care much more about the state than do the Democratic majority and many of his fellow Republicans.

Here is my hope that additional funding for Repair California’s effort to have a constitutional convention cannot be found. Sure, this means that we, the voters, will have to “vote the bums out,” and that this will take time. Right now, it is the only part of the solution that I can see.
