Constitutional Convention for California?

For a moment, I am going to let the dust settle on an apparently al-Qaeda-linked FAILED terrorist attack on a plane landing in Detroit, and attribute the failure to good Karma (Note added December 26, 2009: … “Christmas Karma?”) and heroic action by another passenger, until we know more….

As for Constitutional Conventions, I have generally felt better about the ones that occurred back in the distant past, when “Common Sense” (1, 2) was more “common….” :-) I am honestly not sure whether modern Americans, and particularly Californians, are level-headed enough to tinker with constitutions. :-)

A group called “Repair California” says that California’s state government is so broken that only a Constitutional Convention could effect the necessary change. The group has begun an initiative campaign to gather the necessary signatures, about 1.4 million, by April 15.

The Repair California spokesperson, John Grubb, talked of a Caifornia in which “the budget works,” “where local governments are able to operate again,” and where the power of special interest goups has been significantly reduced. Grubb stated that all regions of the state are backing a Constitutional Convention. California is currently facing a $21 billion budget deficit.

Not bad for a state, huh…? Less than we’ve had, for example, THIS year…! :-)

If enough votes are gathered and the voters agree, California would have its first Constitutional Convention in 130 years.
