Governor running and running for governor

Wow, that title, while not palindromic, is a bit like “Through the Looking-Glass!” :-)

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, running in the relay, will hand the Olympic Torch off to two-time Olympic gold medalist runner Sebastian Coe on Friday morning, the day of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony at the Vancouver Games.

Among other notables who will carry the torch are the father of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, astronaut Julie Payette, singer Jann Arden and former hockey player Richard Brodeur.

The 106-day torch relay is getting closer to Vancouver, where a protest is planned for Friday afternoon, hours before the opening ceremony. Go figure….

Meanwhile, back in California, a Republican who is running for governor after Arnold’s term expires is revising her TV commercial to reflect the number of years that she has REALLY been in California. :-)

I understand the phenomenon. I have been in California only since 1990, but it seems like 30 years to ME, too! No, we are not talking about “Demon Sheep,” now. Meg Whitman, in the recalled version of the biographical commercial, said that she has lived in California for 30 years. But it has been only 23 years….

(Note added February 13, 2010: In government, numbers can kind of “get away from you sometimes” – even if you’re a Republican! :-) )

When I worked at Netscape Communications, we used to laughingly measure the time in “dog years,” because sometimes we “worked like dogs.” :-) (We PLAYED very hard, too!)

We were never TREATED like dogs at Netscape, however! (That happened to me ELSEWHERE! :-) )

So I understand Meg’s confusion…. California can exert certain “reality distortion” and “time warping” effects on people – with no drugs involved.

Take a vacation to California, and find out for yourselves.

(And enjoy watching the Olympics in Vancouver…. Vancouver is a beautiful city, the “Sister City” to San Francisco, and we really enjoyed our visit there years ago.)
