Steve Fossett: waiting for the DNA results (results are in)

Two large bones that appear to be human, a driver’s license with Steve Fossett’s name, a pair of shoes, and a $100 bill were found on Wednesday, a little more than half a mile from the site of Fossett’s plane wreckage, at a remote site in the Sierra Nevada at about 10,000 feet of elevation. The latest site is about a quarter mile from where a hiker found aviation identification cards and $1000 in cash in late September.

DNA testing of the remains will determine whether they are those of Steve Fossett, according to Medera County Sheriff, John Anderson. Fossett’s family has been advised that the remains of Steve Fossett have most likely been found. Animal chew marks on the driver’s license and shoes suggested that animals may have moved the body. DNA testing of bone fragments found earlier determined that those fragments were not human.

(Update November 03, 2008: DNA testing has confirmed that the two large bones that were found are those of Steve Fossett.)

Fossett was last seen on September 3, 2007 when he took off from the Flying-M Ranch near Minden, NV to scout for locations to attempt to break the land speed record in a rocket-propelled car. Fosset was the first person to circumnavigate the globe solo in a ballon and the first to fly a plane around the world solo without refueling.
