Livermore Art Association October meeting
Tonight I attended the monthly joint meeting of the Livermore Art Association (LAA) and Pleasanton Art League and witnessed a demonstration by the plein air colorist Mary Lou Correia. Her work is really amazing! I was especially impressed with the way that she captures the light and (of course) with her use of color.
I talked awhile with another photographer at the meeting, and we shared a sense of awe. The experience reminded me of Arthur C. Clarke’s Third Law, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” I explained to the LAA President that a paintbrush in my hands is an implement of destruction. 
(Incidently, while I was looking up the link for Arthur C. Clarke’s Third Law, I found another quote by Clarke that appealed to the “biologist in me” and suggested that Clarke might have shared my view that intelligence is not one of those qualities appreciated by corporations – “It has yet to be proven that intelligence has any survival value.”)
In the brief biography on her site, Mary Lou Correia is described as “influenced by the Impressionists’ use of brilliant, sensuous layers of color…..” This influence is quite apparent when in a room with her paintings, especially when viewing the paintings close up and at a distance.
Words do not do her work justice. Her paintings must be seen to be truly appreciated!
