Inflation at 5.6%

The annual rate of inflation in the U.S. is now 5.6%, after an increase in July. A “small business” article from CNN states that this is the highest level of inflation in 17 years.

The rate now compares with the (national) 5.7% unemployment rate reported last week.

The Consumer Price Index (monthly basis) moved to 0.8% in July, twice the increase that economists were expecting. Practitioners of “The Dismal Science” had better dust off their computer models. Their performance recently has also been dismal, including the failure to predict the increase in unemployment.

If you have the stomach for it, see the first CNN article for the “blow by blow.”
