Some 32 people in a labor dispute protesting health care and salary proposals at three hotels owned by Disney, many of whom were wearing costumes of famous Disney characters, were arrested at Disneyland gates in Anaheim. The arrests brought a touch of reality to “The Happiest Place on Earth” and bewildered some tourists from other parts of the world.
According to the CNN article, workers had received a free health care plan in the past, in exchange for lower salaries ($2-3/hour less, according to the President of Local 681 representing the workers) than at competing hotels in the area. The article states that now Disney wants to eliminate the free health plan for new hires and create a two-tiered system in which people working less than 30 hours a week would receive no sick or vacation pay, and no holidays.
