Luis Armando Pena Soltren, 66, surrendered to federal authorities when his flight from Havana, Cuba to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York landed. It is the same airport from which he hijacked Flight 281, in 1968, en route from JFK to Puerto Rico. Soltren and his accomplices hijacked the flight, ordering the flight to land in Havana over 40 years ago!
Karma (at least in its simplistic Western form) has always been one of the things in which I’ve believed. (Serendipity is another.)
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said that Soltren “will finally face the American justice system that he has been evading for more than four decades,” according to CNN.
Soltren and three other men, Jose Rafael Rios Cruz, Miguel Castro, and Alejandro Figueroa, conspired to hijack Flight 281 on November 24, 1968, using guns and knives that they had concealed and brought onboard.
Cruz and Castro were sentenced to 15-year and 12-year sentences, respectively, in the 1970’s, after pleading guilty in U.S. District Court in New York. Figueroa was acquitted in 1969 after a bench trial.
