Finally… MMS on iPhone

An article by the CNET senior editor for cell phone reviews, Kent German, noted this morning that he was finally able to send an MMS message on CNET’s iPhone 3G. He then welcomed iPhone (actually, AT&T‘s network) to 2003, :-) noting that tethering is still absent, and stated that, “Whatever AT&T had to do to get its act together, the carrier did it.”

If you have ever waited on AT&T (or any of its coalescing, fragmented precursors) for anything, you know the feeling. (Note added October 4. 2009: For better or worse, the image I have of AT&T is that of the Terminator T-1000 in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” that was broken up (AT&T by the U.S. government; the T-1000 after being bathed in liquid nitrogen) and then flowed back together, like globs of mercury. :-) )

The CNET article notes that you need to connect to iTunes to receive the update, and to confirm that your device is ready, go to Settings>General>About. The carrier version needs to be AT&T 5.5 and you need the latest iPhone 3.1 software update. People who own the original iPhone will be “left out.”

CNET points to Apple links for updating and enabling carrier settings and to Apple’s troubleshooting guide if you need it. Kent German also presents a “How-To” video to get you up and running.
