Yosemite Creek
Yosemite Creek is a creek in Yosemite National Park. The photo above was taken where the Tioga Road (Highway 120) crosses the creek. The creek runs from Grant Lakes and flows southwest and then southeast to join the Merced River at Yosemite Lodge. On the way, it flows over the rim of Yosemite Valley to create Yosemite Falls.
Prior to about 130,000 years ago, Yosemite Creek took another course, to the west, and cascaded down a ravine that is now the route of the Yosemite Falls trail.
The Yosemite Creek watershed encompasses 43 square miles (110 square km) and contains only shallow soils, having been scraped by glaciers. Since there is little soil, water from melting snow runs off very quickly. Later in the year, the low amount of water can leave the mighty Yosemite Falls a mere wet face of rock.
