Mary Travers, Henry Gibson dead

If celebrities “die in threes,” you can please stop now.

After the recent death of Patrick Swayze comes news of two more deaths among entertainment celebrities, singer Mary Travers (of Peter, Paul, and Mary) at 72 and actor Henry Gibson at 73.

Mary Travers died from side effects of treatment from a bone-marrow transplant in her fight with leukemia. She was born in Louisville, KY in November 1936 and grew up in New York’s Greenwich Village. She is most famous as a folk singer with Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul. In 1963, the trio performed the song, “If I Had a Hammer” at the Washington march in which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.

Peter, Paul and Mary’s recordings of “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” “Puff the Magic Dragon,” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” are still recognized today. The trio performed for nearly 50 years, won five Grammy awards, and released 13 “Top 40” Hits. They last performed in New Brunswick, NJ on May 20. Mary Travers is survived by her husband, Ethan Robbins, her daughters Alicia and Erika, her sister Ann Gordon, and her granddaughters Wylie and Virginia.

Henry Gibson played roles that ranged from a poet to an Illinois Nazi in a career that spanned 40 years and both film and television. Folks who watched “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” on TV from 1968-71 may recall the introduction, “A poem by Henry Gibson….” Gibson read short, humorous poems as a regular performer on the show. He appeared as a judge on “Boston Legal” as late as 2008. His movie roles included Nashville and The Long Goodbye in the 1970s. Henry Gibson also played the vengeful neo-Nazi leader who pursued John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd in The Blues Brothers. No details of Gibson’s death were immediately available.
