Keep on dancing!

I spent today in my booth at the Garré Vineyard and Winery in Livermore, on Tesla Road. I met a lot of wonderful people, ate some really great food prepared by the staff of Café Garré, and saw a very inspiring sight!

What was the inspiring sight?

I watched a woman dancing to the great sounds of “The Bayou Boys” playing “New Orleans R&B – Cajun/Zydeco Music,” according to their card (phone 209-743-3025).

What was so inspiring about this particular woman?

It turns out that she is 92 years old. She danced to 5 or 6 songs over the course of the afternoon, and it looked like she was having a wonderful time! Friends of hers told me that she originally came from Louisiana.

I told a gentleman next to me that I want to grow old that way. He said, “Maybe the secret is to keep on dancing!” I think that he may very well be right.

Over the course of the last two days at the Harvest Wine Celebration, I met a lot of people: artists, firefighters, geologists, HR folks, high-tech people, financial folks who had recently been laid off, people who consult for oil companies, teachers – folks from many walks of life. We shared experiences of living in this wonderful state of California, and talked about the good and the bad. Many of the folks I met have had to re-invent themselves in recent years, either as the result of the current recession or as the result of age discrimination in their professions, or both! :-) All of them were upbeat! All of them were flexible. All of them had grown with life’s experiences.

And as one woman said – she had learned to be thankful for every single day.

It was a very pleasant, warm-but-not-hot afternoon, with an occasional light breeze. People seated at tables, talking, drinking wine, sharing stories…. I was able to trade stories about great places to see in California (sometimes illustrated by photos), and I learned about some places where I have not been, YET! :-)

And in the middle of it all was a 92-year-old woman, full of life, dancing to Cajun music and enjoying every minute….
