Tesla Motors plant in Palo Alto

Tesla Motors, makers of all-electric vehicles and recipient of a recent $465 million government loan, will open a power train production plant and corporate headquarters in Palo Alto. Tesla plans to expand production!

The facility, three buildings at the Stanford Research Park, will employ 350 people with space for up to 650. Tesla will also build electric components for other automakers.

I wrote about Tesla at the time it received the government loan, and linked to photos of the Model S sedan, which is slated for production in 2011. The Palo Alto site is in addition to the Model S electric sedan assembly facility, the location of which is still under negotiation. The Palo Alto site will not produce the vehicle. The Model S is a seven-seater that may be priced under $50,000. Tesla currently builds “The Roadster,” which is priced at $109,000.
