Privacy lawsuit filed against Facebook

A group of Facebook users filed a civil lawsuit on August 17, 2009 which alleges that Facebook is violating California consumer privacy laws. The 40-page suit accuses Palo Alto-based Facebook with violation of California privacy and online privacy laws by disseminating private information to third parties for commercial purposes.

The lawsuit was filed in Orange County Superior Court on behalf of five users: two children younger than 13, a user of the original Facebook, an actress and model, and a professional photographer. The suit seeks a jury trial as well as damages and attorney’s fees.

According to the CNET article, Facebook plans to fight the lawsuit. The same article also details a history of privacy-related controversies involving Facebook.
