Fort Hunter Liggett

Sheridan Tank at Fort Hunter Liggett

Fort Hunter Liggett is a U.S. Army fort in southern Monterey County, about 150 miles south of San Francisco and about 250 miles north of Los Angeles. The fort was named after General Hunter Liggett, a lieutenant general, who, as commander of the U.S. First Army in 1918, directed the final phases of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. His medals included: The Distinguished Service Medal, the decorations of the Legion of Honor (from France), the Order of Leopold (from Belgium), and the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus (from Italy). At its current size of 165,000 acres (668 square km), the fort is the largest U.S. Army Reserve command post.

Some (52 acres) of the original land (200,000 acres; 800 square km) was given to Mission San Antonio de Padua, bringing the size of the Mission to 85 acres. The Sheridan Tank photo above was taken on the Mission Road to Mission San Antonio de Padua, just outside the military checkpoint. The eastern end of the Nacimiento-Ferguson Road, the only east-west road to Highway 1 within Big Sur, is accessible from the Mission Road behind the military checkpoint.

Although  the fort is used primarily for Army training, there is a primitive campground for civilians, and according to Wikipedia, a hunter store on the property. Civilian hunters are permitted to hunt on some portions of the fort. There is also a hotel/motel on the property which once served as the hunting lodge for William Randolph Hearst and now services military and civilian personnel.
