Actor Karl Malden has died

Actor Karl Malden died in his sleep at about 2:30 AM this morning. He was 97. Death does not get much gentler than that.

If it is true that “celebrities die in 3’s,” you can all STOP for awhile, and let us mourn for you, and for our loss.

Karl Malden earned an Oscar for best supporting actor in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” one of two of director Elia Kazan‘s classic films in which he appeared along with Marlon Brando. The other, “On the Waterfront” earned Malden a nomination for his role as a priest who crusaded against corrupt union bosses.

Malden was born Mladen George Sekulovich in 1912, in Gary, Indiana. He broke his nose twice playing high school football in Gary. He won a scholarship to Akransas State Teacher’s College but left college to play semi-pro basketball, after a college coach forbid him to appear in a school play. Malden worked in the steel mills of Gary to earn money for drama school.

The CNN article cited lists many of Malden’s roles. Two that I remember are his starring with Michael Douglas in the TV series “The Streets of San Francisco” from 1971-1977 and his playing of General Omar Bradley alongside George C. Scott‘s title role in the film, “Patton.”

Malden was president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1989 to 1992, and he won the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2004.
