Steve Jobs’ liver transplant

According to a Wall Street Journal article on Friday, which named no sources, Steve Jobs of Apple had a liver transplant operation in Tennessee about two months ago.

(Note added June 24, 2009: Yesterday, Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute confirmed the operation, with the patient’s approval.)

The Wall Street Journal report seems to confirm a January report that Jobs was considering a liver transplant and rumors in mid-April that Jobs was having surgery in Memphis, TN.

This article states that two hospitals in Memphis are designated liver transplant centers: Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center and Methodist University Hospital. The article further states that the waiting list for donors is shorter in Tennessee than in most other states.

Apple continues to say that it looks forward to Jobs’ return at the end of June.

Since I spent an entire year based at Apple (then Apple Computer) in the Internet Services group while I was a Netscape employee, I feel fortunate to have seen one part of Apple from the inside, and I harbor no illusions about Steve Jobs. If you look at the contributions of the man, he has (both personally and through managing others) contributed much more than most people hope to in their lifetimes.

We wish him health, happiness, and continued good fortune, as well as a quick return to that function that he performs so well.

(Note added June 28, 2009: And Steve did not disappoint – he’s back….)
