Lest we forget…

… in California, in Cleveland, OH, or anywhere else in the world….

Facebook has disabled two of the five Holocaust-denial groups that have caused much controversy recently. “Denial” appears to be the operative word, and education, as much as I hate to admit it, seems futile.

In the Cleveland area of Ohio, the Nazi war crimes suspect, John Demjanjuk, age 89, was deported to Germany this evening after he was removed from his home in the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers earlier today. The plane carrying Demjanjuk left Cleveland airport at 7:13 PM today EDT. Demjanjuk is wanted by German authorities for his alleged involvement in the killings at Sobibor, a Nazi death camp in Poland, during World War II. Last Thursday, the Supreme Court denied a stay of deportation, and a German court ruled against a request for a stay last Wednesday.

The deportation of the alleged Nazi guard sets the stage for an extraordinary war crimes trial. Regardless of the verdict, such a war crimes trial should touch on matters, however painful, that the people of the world apparently need to hear about again… if the controversial groups on Facebook are any indication.

Officials in Berlin issued a warrant that charges Demjanjuk with being an accessory to the murder of about 29,000 civilians at the Nazi death camp Sobibor.
