The 10 Most Prophetic…

…science fiction movies of all time, which “got the science right,” according to the author, have been picked by Popular Mechanics. They include some of my favorites, including: 2001: A Space Odyssey (See! It’s not just me.), Short Circuit (Science fiction can be *cute*!), Soylent Green (See this blog entry re global warming). Blade Runner (Brilliant!), The Running Man (“Do you know who *I* am?” “Yah, you’re the a__hole on TV!” [That’s my governator!]) and The Road Warrior (We see some of these people on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station platforms on Oakland Raiders home game days).

I have only one quarrel with the author, and that is a minor one. I know from personal experience that iris scanning is out there. A show on HD Theater today concerned with combatting terrorism described facial recognition software, and general “pattern recognition” software could easily put all of those cameras out there (especially in Great Britain [one camera for every 45 people]) to use, for good or evil. It makes me wonder if East Germany would have “gone out of business” if it had today’s software.

I might have voted for the original Rollerball, with James Caan as Jonathan E, over some of the other author picks. Jonathan E plays ball for the global Energy Corporation (Naw, couldn’t happen! :-) ) in 2018, against the teams of other “corporate states” (sound familiar?). Along with Soylent Green, Rollerball may have gotten the timing right. Rollerball is a movie about the triumph of the individual, and reminds us that in the “teamwork” and anonymity of corporations, most discoveries are still made by individuals, working alone.

Take a look at the article, and see what you think.
