Microsoft patches and parodies

Well, I’ve got GOOD news, and BAD news….

The GOOD news is:

Microsoft has fixed security holes in Excel, Windows, and Word that have been exploited in the wild, as well as other holes for which information or exploit code exists. The patch affects Office 2002, 2003, and 2007 for PC and 2004 and 2008 for Mac. In all, Microsoft issued eight patches for about two dozen vulnerabilities. See the CNET reference for the details! Missing from the patch, according to CNET, is a fix for a zero-day Powerpoint vulnerability that Microsoft warned, on April 2, had been targeted by attackers.

The BAD news…? (Maybe it’s just UGLY news….)

The latest series of Microsoft ads, called the “laptop hunter” ads by some, has been parodied in video on the Web. One, linked in a CNET article, features “Frank” a “picky” homeless guy with $1000 to spend on a laptop. I keep my site “G-rated,” so please note the CNET warning that the video is probably not  (in my “guesstimate,” the video might be considered to be a “PG-13” i.e., not “G” but less offensive content than you would find in most public high schools :-) ). The CNET article describes the content, if you choose not to view the video.

Needless to say, “homeless Frank” buys a PC and puts it to good use. :-)

As I have said before, humor can be devastating in the hands of trained marketing professionals (even untrained ones).
