Phil Spector convicted of second degree murder

Some California news of general interest….

Music producer, 69-year-old Phil Spector, famous for his professional trademark “Wall of Sound,” was found guilty of second degree murder in the 2003 death of 40-year-old actress, Lana Clarkson, after a jury deliberated for about 30 hours in Los Angeles. Clarkson was found dead with a gunshot wound through the roof of her mouth in Spector’s mansion in February of 2003.

Spector’s “Wall of Sound” arrangements included Number 1 hits “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes (see Ronnie Spector) and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin‘” by The Righteous Brothers. Spector co-produced the Beatles‘ final album, “Let It Be” and worked with George Harrison and John Lennon after the Beatles’ breakup. Spector won two Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

Clarkson starred in the B-movie, “Barbarian Queen” in 1985. She also appeared in many other films including “Scarface,” “DeathStalker,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” and the comedy spoof, “Amazon Women on the Moon.”

Five women testified during the trial that Spector had threatened them with firearms. Spector’s driver testified that he heard a loud noise and saw Spector leave the house, gun in hand, and say, “I think I killed somebody,” according to the CNN article cited above.

Spector faces a possible sentence of 18 years-to-life imprisonment during sentencing on May 29. The defense is planning an appeal.
